Fountain Group
About Fountain Group
Fountain Group sits amid the dynamic geothermal landscape of Yellowstone’s Lower Geyser Basin, Wyoming. This primitive hot spring area captivates with its vibrant hydrothermal features, including the steaming Celestine Pool, which bubbles and occasionally erupts with intense energy. The surreal colors and hissing steam create an otherworldly atmosphere you won’t find at typical hot springs in Wyoming.
Getting There
To reach Fountain Group, you navigate boardwalk trails within Yellowstone National Park’s Lower Geyser Basin. The main parking areas are nearby, but expect to walk a short distance on well-maintained paths. Although the trails are easy, be prepared for uneven ground and occasional mud due to geothermal runoff.
What to Expect
The water here is extremely hot at 201°F, making it unsafe for direct swimming or soaking, unlike many Wyoming swimming holes. Instead, you experience the raw power and vibrant colors of geothermal activity up close while strolling among fumes and geysers. The area tends to attract visitors during peak park hours but remains less crowded than Old Faithful’s geyser basin. Facilities are limited to basic boardwalks and informational signs.
Tips for Visitors
Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the busiest times and capture glowing steam in soft light. Bring sturdy shoes and stay on marked paths to protect fragile thermal features and yourself. No fees beyond Yellowstone entrance apply, but respect strict park rules that prohibit bathing or touching the boiling pools for safety.
