About Goldbug Hot Springs
Goldbug Hot Springs offers a striking retreat where steaming cascades tumble into a series of natural rock pools nestled in a vivid green crevice along Idaho’s desert hillside. The water is warm and soothing without the typical sulfur scent, inviting you to soak in peaceful, mineral-rich surroundings framed by rugged canyon walls.
Getting There
Reaching Goldbug Hot Springs requires a 2-mile hike each way, with sections that are steep and demanding. The trail starts from a small gravel parking area off Route 93, about 23 miles south of Salmon, Idaho. After parking, you’ll climb over a fence and follow a well-worn path down toward the pools. Keep in mind parking is limited and the trail can be slippery in spots.
What to Expect
You’ll find multiple natural pools of varying temperatures, formed by a hot waterfall cascading down the rock face. The atmosphere is tranquil but can attract visitors, especially on weekends. Facilities are minimal—no restrooms or developed amenities—reinforcing the untouched, primitive character of this Idaho hot spring.
Tips for Visitors
Plan your visit during weekdays or early morning hours to avoid crowds. Wear sturdy hiking shoes for the steep trail and pack plenty of water and snacks. The area is clothing optional and free of charge, but respect for the environment is essential. Arriving prepared ensures a memorable soak among some of Idaho’s most scenic swimming holes.
