About Step Falls

Step Falls offers a refreshing escape in Maine's rugged wilderness, featuring crisp, cold spring waters cascading through a series of shallow pools and natural waterslides. This primitive spring delivers an adventurous swimming experience amid the dense forest just south of Grafton Notch State Park. You’ll find wide, inviting pools perfect for cooling off on warm summer days, surrounded by the tranquil sounds of the forest.

Getting There

Reaching Step Falls involves a moderately challenging hike of about 20 minutes from a small, limited parking area near Newry, Maine. Starting from Rumford, you follow Route 2 southeast, then continue north on Route 26 to the trailhead. The trail winds through the lush terrain, so prepare for uneven footing and brush. Parking fills quickly during peak season, so arriving early is wise.

What to Expect

At Step Falls, the water is chilly but invigorating, with multiple pools connected by natural waterslides—none deep, but perfect for wading and swimming. The atmosphere is peaceful and relatively secluded, though you may encounter fellow adventure-seekers on summer weekends. Facilities are minimal—there are no restrooms or developed amenities—preserving the spring's natural character.

Tips for Visitors

Visit Step Falls in summer for the best swimming conditions and warmer weather. Bring sturdy shoes for the hike, water shoes for slippery rocks, and pack out all trash to keep the area pristine. There’s a donation box to support maintenance, but no official fees. Because the pools are shallow with slippery surfaces, it’s not ideal for small children. Clothing is optional, allowing for a freeing immersion in nature.
