About Sweet Air

Sweet Air is a refreshing cold spring nestled within Maryland’s Gunpowder Falls State Park Central Area. This primitive spring spot is embraced by the gentle flow of Little Gunpowder Creek, offering a natural setting where cool waters invite you to pause and play. Its untouched character makes it a standout among Maryland swimming holes for those who enjoy a more adventurous outdoor experience.

Getting There

To reach Sweet Air, you navigate through northern Maryland by heading north on Route 1 past Reckord Road, then west on Route 152, followed by a southward turn onto Baldwin Mill Road (Route 165), and finally a quick right onto Greene Road. Parking is plentiful once you arrive, but expect to take a moderate 15-60 minute hike along Little Gunpowder Creek to reach the prime water spots.

What to Expect

The water is crisp and clear, perfect for wading and shallow water play in the summer heat. The atmosphere is peaceful, surrounded by forest and the murmur of flowing water. Facilities are minimal, so the experience leans authentic and natural. Crowds are generally light, allowing moments of solitude by this cold Maryland spring.

Tips for Visitors

Visit during summer months for the most comfortable water temperatures. Wear sturdy shoes for the hike and bring water shoes or sandals for rocky creek bottoms. There are no entry fees, but remember that clothing is required, and facilities are primitive—pack out all trash and respect the natural environment.
