About Whaleback

Whaleback offers a refreshing escape in the heart of North Carolina, featuring a deep, crystal-clear swimming hole nestled beneath a cascade of the Davidson River. Massive rocks frame the cold spring, creating a striking natural pool ideal for immersing yourself in pure, cool water surrounded by tranquil wilderness.

Getting There

To reach Whaleback, drive about 3.1 miles from RT 276 on FR 475 until you spot the "Group Camp - Cove Creek" sign on the right. Park in the large pullout on the left and take a short, easy path down to the river—just a 5-minute walk from the lot. Ample parking is available, making access straightforward despite the primitive setting.

What to Expect

Whaleback’s chilled waters offer relief on warm summer days, with a quiet atmosphere thanks to few visitors. The swimming hole’s depth invites slow dips and peaceful reflection amid rugged natural beauty. Facilities are minimal, so the experience feels authentic and undisturbed.

Tips for Visitors

Visit in summer for the best swimming conditions, and bring water shoes for the rocky riverbed. There are no fees or formal amenities, so pack out everything you bring in and respect the pristine environment. Early mornings or weekdays help avoid occasional small crowds.
